Hyphessobrycon igneus

A small, semi-transparent fish with white flecks edging the dorsal and anal fins and red patches on the tail fin. Males and females similar, but females more robust, particularly at spawning time.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A peaceful, schooling fish that prefers midwater levels of the aquarium. It is a shy species that will only do well in a tank with plenty of cover (e.g., live or plastic plants) and peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament.

This fish breeds in a similar way to other small tetras. Soft, acid water is essential. Eggs are scattered on the bottom of the tank and are prone to bacterial and fungal decay. After a few days the fry are free swimming and will accept small live foods such as brine shrimp nauplii.

Family Group: Characins
Distribution Brazil

Size 3 cm
Water Parameters Soft, acid water preferred, but adaptable
