Channa pleurophthalma(Eyespot Snakehead)

One of the most highly prized snakeheads on account of its very attractive colours and moderate size. Body colour variable but typically blue-green, olive or light brown above, paler underneath, with four or five eyespots on the flanks. These spots are black with orange rings around them. Colours somewhat more brilliant on juveniles than adults. There are no known colouration differences between the sexes.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Channa pleurophthalma is one of the more sociable snakeheads, outside of breeding at least. Singletons work well in communities of large but peaceful tankmates such as plecs and predatory catfish. Channa pleurophthalma can also be kept in groups, but if the fish pair off, they may become territorial towards their tankmates, including conspecifics.

Diet is as per snakeheads generally: chunky seafood and robust live foods such as earthworms and river shrimps. They do not need to be fed feeder fish.

There are no reports of breeding under aquarium conditions.
