Chilatherina bleheri(Bleher's Rainbowfish)

A remarkable rainbowfish easily distinguished by a tail fin that has rounded, rather than pointed, tips to each lobe. Each of these edges is marked with a thin blue line. The body is silvery, with blue across the front half and red along the caudal peduncle onto the tail fin. A pale streak runs along the dorsal surface from the snout across the back. Juveniles are often weakly coloured, but adults are stunning fish. Slow growing; takes up to 18 months to reach maturity.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A lively, schooling fish well suited to community tanks. Males will spar with one another and other rainbowfish, so it is important to keep them in large groups. It is best not to mix rainbowfish of very different size or temperament.

Omnivorous, and will consume flake foods and wet-frozen foods willingly.

Sexually mature fish are large and develop a deep-bodied profile. Breeding similar to that of other rainbowfish. Pairs scatter their eggs among feathery-leaved plants. Sunlight promotes spawning; males will chase females through the plants. They are notorious egg-eaters though, so the parents should be removed after spawning. The eggs take a long time to hatch, around 2 weeks. The fry are very small and need tiny live foods (infusoria).
