Melanotaenia splendida tatei(Desert Rainbowfish)
A typical rainbowfish in build, with colours that become stronger as the fish matures. Males slightly larger and a little more brightly coloured. Wild fish are found in a variety of waters including streams, rivers and lakes.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful schooling fish; keep in groups of six or more for best effect. Juveniles are often somewhat drab. This is typical of rainbowfish. Only when they approach maturity to the colours become fully developed. This species make an excellent community tank resident. They are very active and require plenty of swimming space. Will eat a variety of foods including flake, small pellets, and frozen foods. Breeding is straightforward. As with other rainbowfish, they scatter their eggs across plants such as Java moss. The eggs hatch after about a week, and the fry once free swimming go to the top of the water column to feed. Although slow growing, rainbowfish fry are fairly easy to rear accepting small live foods such as rotifers as well as liquid fry food.
