Rocio octofasciata (Jack Dempsey Cichlid)
A sturdy, robust cichlid with a fairly elongate body and trim finnage. Basic body colour is blue with lighter blue speckles and often a pinkish cast around the throat and ventral surface, but these fish can change their colours dramatically. Males have longer fins than the marginally less brightly coloured females.
Formerly known as Cichlasoma octofasciatum. An 'electric blue' variant is widely sold, though its precise origins are obscure. Supposedly produced by selective breeding, they do not breed true, leading some to believe they may be hybrids of some sort.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
One of the most popular of the Central American cichlids, but also a very aggressive fish for its size. Keep either alone or in a community with other aggressive cichlids of similar size. Likes to dig. Naturally inhabits sluggish waters with lots of vegetation and places to hide. Predatory, and will eat any small animals including fish. Also requires some green foods in its diet, such as algae wafers. Easy to breed.
