Toxotes chatareus (Seven Banded Archerfish)

Compared with the common archerfish, this species has more bands on the flanks, typically seven, but sometimes more or fewer. A distinctive feature of this species is the presence of small dark spots in between the longer vertical bands, as well as a anal and dorsal fins that tend to be entirely dark in colour.

There are truly freshwater populations of this species, but almost all the fish offered for sale come from brackish water and will need to be kept in a brackish water aquarium.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Archerfish need to be kept either singly or in large groups (at least 6 specimens) otherwise larger specimens tend to bully smaller ones. They are completely peaceful towards fish too big to be eaten, and should only be combined with docile tankmates.
