Hoplias malabaricus (Wolf Fish, Trahira)

A big, powerful fish with a strong body. Rather similar to the bowfin (Amia) in looks. Mottled shades of brown on the dorsal surface and flanks; off-white below. The head is big and armed with very large conical teeth.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Wild fish are famously hardy, able to live in even swampy conditions by breathing air. In aquaria though these fish appear to be quite touchy, and care must be taken to ensure water quality it good and that adequate water changes are carried out. At least 50% per week is recommended. Water chemistry is not critical.

Wild fish are carnivores, taking invertebrates of various types when young and small fish once they mature. Earthworms and river shrimps are readily taken, but once settled they can also be fed with frozen foods including lancefish and chunky seafood.

Juveniles may be tolerant of one another, even gregarious, but adults are very territorial. Best kept alone.

Potentially dangerous because of its very sharp teeth and strong jaws. Prone to jumping, so keep in a securely covered aquarium.

Not bred in home aquaria.
