Sewellia lineolata (Butterfly Plec)
Sewellia are small, dorso-ventrally compressed fish that inhabit very fast-flowing streams. They are highly adapted to living in such environments, and use their body shape to "suck" onto the rocks and so avoid being washed away. There are numerous species, and distinguishing them can be tricky.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
All Sewellia feed on aufwuchs, the mixture of green algae and tiny invertebrates found encrusting rocks and submerged wood. In the aquarium they feed readily on bloodworms, algae wafers and suitable live foods such as tubifex.
These fish require a very specific kind of aquarium with extremely strong water current and lots of oxygen. Strong lighting is recommended to encourage a good growth of green algae. Choose tankmates with care, since not all fish tolerate such conditions well. Other loaches might be an option, as would things like minnows and danios.
These fish are mildly territorial towards one another, but work well in groups. Breeding in captivity is rare.
