Melanotaenia trifasciata (Banded Rainbowfish)

A very pretty fish this that develops vivid colouration with age. They are very peaceful and prefer to be kept in a group. The fish tend to be young when they arrrive at the fish shops and consequently will not have developed their full colouration. A good addition to any community tank and they are reltively easy to breed

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Generally peaceful and make good community fish.

Very peaceful, but also very active, particularly in the mid to upper regions of the aquarium.

Males tend to be more brightly coloured and are larger and more deeper bodied than the females. The females have smaller rounded dorsal and anal fins.

Preferred water conditions for breeding are neutral to hard water that is alkaline. Keep the breeding tank well planted( java moss is ideal) as the fish will scatter their eggs upon them and as soon as they have spawned remove the eggs to a separate rearing tank. As soon as the fry are free swimmimg feed them on infusoria and then other suitable fry foods such as baby brine shrimp.
