Serrasalmus elongatus (Pike Piranha, Elongate Piranha)

An elongate piranha of medium size notable for its angular snout and slender build. Essentially plain silver with faint black spots on the body, a small, round black spot behind the gill covers, and a horizontal black "mask" across the eyes and gill covers.

Very distinctive and unlikely to be mistaken for any other piranha. Only rarely traded.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An aggressive loner that needs to be kept in its own aquaria. Sensitive to poor water quality and requires a tank with lots of water movement and plenty of oxygen, but otherwise does well in sufficiently large aquaria.

Wild fish feed primarily on (whole) small fish and the fins and scales of larger fish. In aquaria live foods including earthworms and river shrimps are favoured for settling in. Settled fish will eat whitebait and chunky seafood happily, and after a time may be trained to take pellets and flake too.
