Chilotilapia rhoadesii (Lake Malawi Bream)

A large, laterally compressed species. Mature males are blue, with colourful fins and egg spots on the anal fin. Females are silvery, with two prominent longitudinal bands running along the flanks. Both sexes have indistinct vertical banding on the flanks.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A specialised snail-eater, this fish will eat a variety of other invertebrate foods in captivity such as bloodworms as well as various dried foods. Only slightly territorial, this cichlid is essentially peaceful towards its own kind and gets along well with other species of a similar nature. Does best when one male is kept with multiple females, but this is less important if the tank is large and has plenty of hiding places. A typical maternal mouthbrooder.
