Pantodon buchholzi (Butterfly Fish)
This fish is available from time to time at shops.
A striking fish with magnificent looking fins that will always be found just below the surface. Butterfly fish have very large pectoral fins and make good jumpers so always ensure you have a tight fitting lid.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Butterfly fish are predators and consequently tank mates should be chosen with care. Their usual food is insects and other larvae found at the surface although other smaller fish cannot be ruled out if they are too slow to avoid capture. They will generally eat all live food and occasionally flake food.
Sexing the fish is reasonably easy. The anal fin of the male has a convex curve, whilst on the female it is generally straight in comparison.
Breeding has been achieved in captivity, although reports are a bit sketchy. Where breeding has taken place it has been reported that the fry are very difficult to raise.
