Hampala macrolepidota (Hampala Barb)

Adult fish are silvery with a vertical band about halfway along the body. Juveniles also have a second black bar close to the base of the tail. The caudal and paired fins are reddish, though this is most apparent on juveniles. There are no obvious differences between the sexes.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Unusually for barbs this schooling species is predatory rather than omnivorous, feeding on insect larvae, aquatic crustaceans and small fish. In captivity it is easy to feed with frozen and prepared foods of all types.

An active fish, this species is found in rivers rather than still water habitats, and appreciates clean, well-oxygenated water. Does not do well when kept too warm.

A good community species, though large, and being a fish-eater, should only be kept with tankmates of comparable size.

No reports of breeding in home aquaria.
