Parrachanna africana (African Snakehead)

A robust, mottled-brown snakehead with handsome markings along its flanks. Older books commonly refer to this species under a variety of other names including Channa africana or Ophiocephalus obscurus.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Hardy and adaptable, but does need a shady, planted aquarium to feel secure. Will jump out of open tanks. Juveniles may be gregarious when small, but as they mature they become increasingly aggressive and cannibalistic. Adults will usually need to be kept alone or in matched pairs.

Feeding may be problematic. Juveniles consume river shrimps, earthworms, and other small invertebrates. Adults will take these foods as well, but can be weaned onto wet-frozen substitutes. Dried foods and pellets are rarely taken.

This medium-sized snakehead does well in aquaria, but its territoriality and predatory habits will cause problems for those unused to keeping snakeheads generally.
