Gasteropelecus sternicla (River Hatchetfish)

A small hatchet fish with a silvery body and elongated pectoral fins.

Quite widely sold, but easily confused with the superficially similar and more commonly traded Thoracocorax securis, known as the silver hatchetfish. Thoracocorax securis can be distinguished by its much deeper body and larger size. The anal fin of Thoracocorax securis is also approximately rectanguar, while that of Gasteropelecus sternicla is much more triangular.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A lively, peaceful species well suited to community tanks without aggressive or overly active tankmates. These fish get along very well with species such as cardinal tetras, neons, Corydoras, Apistogramma, and small plecs.
