Moenkhausia pittieri (Diamond Tetra)
As the name suggests, these fish really do sparkle and kept as a group they look very good indeed. They are fairly easy to come by and given their peaceful temperament they are perfect for a community tank.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A superb community fish, these tetras get along well with most other small to medium sized community species. They are not predatory, though they will eat livebearer fry. They do not nip fins or eat plants.
Breeding is not easy. Spawning takes place in dimly-lit tanks with mossy plants on the substrate. After spawning, the parents should be removed. The eggs hatch after three days, and the fry are free swimming within the next two or three days. At this point they will eat finely powdered flake food or Liquifry. They can subsequently be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp and then slightly large lived foods such as daphnia.
