Archocentrus nigrofasciatus (Convict Cichlid, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum)
One of the classic cichlids of the hobby, this species is widely sold and easily recognised. Basic colour is grey with dark grey vertical bands, but females especially often bear variations including patches of red and yellow on the body and fins. Males are substantially larger than the females and have longer fins. Old males may sport a nuchal hump.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
An easy cichlid to keep and breed except for its aggressive, territorial nature. Best kept in a single species tank or a large community tank with other robust Central American cichlids and armoured catfish. Likes to dig and will uproot plants. Decorate the tank with rocks and bogwood to provide hiding places.
For breeding purposes these fish are best kept as a group of six or more juveniles and then allowed to pair off naturally. Placing a male and female into a new tank often leads to fighting and the death of the female. Once the fish have paired naturally excess fish can be removed. Paired convict cichlids make excellent parents. They are prolific, and the fry are very easy to rear.
