Poecilia spehnops (Black Molly)

The black molly is an artifical strain that has been popular for many years. Its dark colour makes a wonderful contrast to other fish, and it looks especially good in planted tanks.

These are naturally inhabitats of coastal streams and benefit from the addition of a small amount of salt to the water. A specific gravity of 1.002 to 1.005 is ideal. They can be adapted to higher salinities as well, and even to fully marine conditions if required.

While they can be kept in fresh water, the pH and hardness levels must be high; in water that is acidic or soft these fish are plagues with fungal infections, fin rot, and other unpleasant diseases.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Mollies are peaceful and easy to keep with other fish. They are very bold, and will feed on virtually anything, but greenstuffs are important. Slices of cucumber and cooked peas make a good supplement to a staple diet of vegetarian flake food. In addition, they will eat some alage in the aquarium. Mollies relish bloodworms and other small live foods.

Breeding is easy, and the fry are usually ignored by their parents. They can be raised on algae, powdered flake, and small live foods.
