Xiphophorus hellerii (Swordtail)
A sturdy, fast moving livebearer that is available in a wider variety of artificial forms. The wild type is greenish with a series of coloured stripes running along the flank from the eye to the tail fin, and the males have a sword-like extension to the dorsal fin, from which comes the common name.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A large livebearer with a reputation for being a bit more aggressive than most of the others. Males in particular can be short-tempered towards one another as well as unresponsive females. For this reason, it is best to keep more females than males, and to ensure the tank is large and well planted if you want to keep more than a single male.
Breeding is easy, with the fry growing quickly on powdered flake, liquid fry food, small live foods, and baby brine shrimp. Adults will eat flake foods, but herbivore flake food is recommended for best results. Swordtails will sometimes hybridise with platies, so these two fish are best kept apart.
