Cichlasoma festae (Festae Cichlid, Red Terror, Nandopsis festae)

A very beautiful but also very large and aggressive cichlid. Colours vary, but in breeding condition the male fish are orange with dark green-grey vertical bands and a dense covering of silvery blue spots. The fins are red and peppered with blue spots. There is a prominent eye-spot on the base of the tail fin. The face is yellow-orange. Females lack the blue spots and have prominent black patches on the dorsal, anal, and ventral fins.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Very territorial and aggressive. Highly destructive, and will uproot plants, dig up gravel, move stones, and damage equipment such as heaters. Predatory. Cannot really be kept with any tankmates. Rearing a group of juveniles and then removing spare fish once a pair has formed is really the only practical way to keep this species.

Breeding is not difficult, though pairing off such large and aggressive fish will be a challenge. Once settled, the parents will spawn on a flat surface. Several thousand eggs are produced. These are guarded by both parents. The fry are large and easy to rear.
