Oryzias latipes (Japanese Ricefish, Medaka)

A small, killifish-like surface dwelling species widely maintained as a laboratory animal but only infrequently offered as an aquarium fish. Colouration varies from brown to pinkish-gold, though artificial forms, including golden and albino forms, are also available. There are no obvious differences between the sexes.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An easy species to maintain, and consequently very popular for use in laboratories, even to the point that this fish has been maintained on the Space Shuttle!

Very peaceful and gregarious, the ricefish is an ideal addition to the small community tank. It is disturbed by large midwater species such as barbs, but would combine well with coldwater and subtropical gobies and other small species.

Water chemistry is not critical but moderately hard water is recommended. The addition of a small amount of marine salt mix to the water (around SG 1.001-1.003) is not essential but useful in soft water areas or if your ricefish fail to thrive.

Easy to feed, and will accept dried foods readily.

Breeding behaviour is interesting. Fertilisation takes place internally or externally, with the eggs being carried about on the female's anal fin until they stick to plants through which the fish swims. It takes over ten days for the large eggs to hatch, at which point the fry can be immediately reared on liquid fry food.
