Caridina sp. 'Crystal ' (Crystal Shrimp)
There are many different crystal shrimps, referred to sometimes by their dominant colour: red, yellow, blue, etc. Most of these are artificial forms bred in captivity.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Caridina and Neocaridina species are consistent in their requirements. All feed primarily on algae and micro-organisms of various types, and do best in mature aquarium. To some degree they will get enough to eat in a mature tank simply by foraging in the natural way, but they will also eat fragments of flake food, algae pellets, and even small bloodworms and other such foods. Java moss is particularly appreciated by these shrimps: as well as providing cover for when they are moulting, the moss also traps particles of food that supports a rich fauna of micro-organisms that the shrimps will eat.
In a quiet aquarium they make an excellent alternative to catfish or loaches. However, their small size and sensitivity to poor water conditions means that they are not a good choice for the standard community tank. Fish like clown loaches and angelfish will simply eat them, but even curious or nippy things like barbs could end up damaging them. Either keep alone or with very peaceful species such as neons, cardinals, dwarf Corydoras, Kuhli loaches, Endler guppies, and so on.
Breeding Caridina sp. "Crystal Red" is surprisingly unproblematic. Given good conditions, females will brood batches of eggs under their swimmerets for periods of up to 3 weeks. The baby shrimps that emerge from the eggs are essentially miniature adults, and assuming they are not eaten by their tankmates or washed into the filter, grow rapidly without any special attention from the aquarist.
