Polypterus lapradei

A big, robust bichir with a dark green-grey body marked with distinctive longitudinal bands. As is common with the more specialised fish-eating species, the lower jaw is slightly longer than the upper jaw.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

This large, snappy species is best kept alone or with armoured catfish. Not a good community species.

Feeding is unproblematic; in the wild they feed on fish as well as invertebrates of various types, in aquaria they readily take earthworms and river shrimps. Once settled in they take seafood and small frozen fish (lancefish, whitebait).

No reports of breeding in home aquaria.
