Neolamprologus leleupi

A very attractive cichlid which is native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. They are relatively easy to come by in the shops..

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

These fish are relatively peaceful.

Sexing the fish can be very difficult when they are young, but at maturity the males are larger than the females.

They are generally easy to care for, but will only thrive if kept in water conditions similar to their native habitat which is very hard and alkaline.

The best way to get a breeding pair is to buy a group of juveniles and grow them on. They are cave spawners and therefore will require plently of rocks and caves. The substrate should be relatively fine. Once you see a pair form a bond transfer them to a separate tank with similar conditions.

If you are successful and the fish do spawn they tend to make good parents with the females protecting the brood whilst the male will police their territory. They are cave spawners and can be quite secretive so it is important to monitor them closely. The eggs will hatch out in four to five days and once free swimming should be fed on the usual fry foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp.
