Helostoma temminckii (Pink Kissing Gouramy)
This is an artifical morph of the kissing gouramy. It is usually pink all over though some specimens may be darker or more yellowish than others. A further modified version exists that has a truncated body; this the "balloon pink kisser".
Kissing gouramies appreciate a large tank with peaceful tankmates. They are naturally plankton and algae eaters and need to have a diet rich in greenstuffs. Cooked lettuce and slices of vegetables such as courgette should always be available. Vegetarian flake foods, such as those sold for mollies and cichlids, make an excellent staple. In addition they will greedily take bloodworms and other small invertebrate foods.
Because they eat plants and like to dig, these fish are not suitable for planted aquaria.
There are no reliable sexual differences visible to the aquarist.
In some books this pink kissing gouramy is given its own Latin name, Helostoma rudolfi.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Pink kissers are well known for their "kissing" behaviour but the purpose of this is not clear. It may be some form of aggression.
These fish will tolerate most water conditions but will only breed in soft, acid water. The male does not build a nest and eggs are instead clustered under a floating leaf. Lettuce works well for this, and as it decays it also provides food for the infusorians the fry like to eat.
