| Similar to the more widely traded Pink-tailed Chalceus (Chalceus erythrurus) but not quite so large and with a redder tail fin. Apart from the dorsal fin, the remaining fins are yellow.

| Juveniles look a lot like giant tiger barbs, with very bold greenish-blue vertical stripes on a greenish-gold body and vivid orange fins. As the fish mature the contrast between the stripes and the body colour diminishes and the fins become less brightly coloured. Nonetheless they remain very attractive
