Neolamprologus brevis

A shell dweller which is endemic to lake Tanganyika. They use empty shells as hiding places as well as a spawning area. These fish are frequently available although there are several colour variants.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

As with most cichlids, these fish are territorial although given their size the area they will command is relatively small. One of the keys to keeping these fish is to provide them with several empty snail shells so that they have a choice of home. Sometimes both fish will share the same shell. Provide them with a sand substrate with a depth of around 4cm which gives them scope to dig aropund their shell and adjust it as they see fit.

To achieve spawning success the fish need to be kept in alkaline and hard water conditions. It is a good idea to buy a group of fish and wait until a pair form a bond. The males are larger than the females and will attain a size of around 6cm whilst the females will only reach around 4cm. You will know if a pair have formed because they will at some point start to share a shell. When you have a pair remove the other fish provide them with relatively dim lighting and continue to feed them on a good diet.

If you do achieve spawning success they can be safely left with the parents. Feed the fry on baby brine shrimp and other suitable fry foods.
