Neolamprologus multifasciatus (Multi , Shell-Dweller )
A small, pinkish-brown cichlid with blue eyes and numerous thin brown vertical stripes on its flanks. Sexing them is hard. Males are bigger than females, and "pairs" may be seen hovering over the same shell (these fish are harem spawners so such pairs are short-lived). Considered to be one of the smallest cichlids in the world.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A superb choice for small hard water aquaria. Needs a tank with a sandy substrate (ideally a mix of smooth silica sand and coral sand) with some large snails (such as escargot snails) pushed into it. To some degree the fish will arrange the shells and sand as they see fit, but initially the shells should be aperture upwards so the fish can swim in easily. Although best kept alone, small midwater fish such as Endler guppies may be used as dither fish.

While these fish are very small, the males are territorial. Allow 45 litres for a colony of one male and 3-4 females, and a larger aquarium if more than one male is to be kept.

Breeding is easy. Spawning takes place inside the shells and the female does most of the broodcare. Once the fry are free-swimming they will take brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered flake food.
