Geophagus abalios

Large, deep-bodied eartheater with rows of red spots along its flanks. The fins are marked with red and blue squiggles. There is a distinctive black spot halfway along the flank. Unlike similar Geophagus species, this species doesn't have any blue or red markings on its face. There are no obvious differences between the sexes.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Basic care is similar to that of other geophagines. A large, well-filtered aquarium with plenty of swimming space and a soft sandy substrate. Plants and bogwood can be used but placed around the edges. Very intolerant of nitrate; regular water changes are essential. Tankmates should be limited to dither fish (such as tetras of appropriate size) or loricariid catfish. Although gregarious, the species is aggressive towards its own kind at times, so should be kept in a fair sized group of at least five specimens. Infrequently bred in captivity; appears to be a mouthbrooding species with both parents guarding the eggs and fry.
