An impressive fish, particularly when kept in large groups. Both sexes are smoky-grey in colour. The fins on the female are red, while those on the male are black. The male also has a much larger dorsal fin.
Fish information
(behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful fish, these fish likes to be kept in a group of at least a dozen specimens. Males will perform mock-battles, without harm but in the process putting on a very entertaining display. While some Megalamphodus have a reputation for being delicate, this species is quite easy to look after.
Breeding is as for Hyphessobrycon. Soft, acid water is essential.
