Cyrtocara moorii (Malawi Blue Dolphin, Haplochromis moori)
![]() |
An unmistakeable cichlid, widely sold and very popular. Both sexes are shiny mid blue, but the male has a pronounced hump on his forehead, from which comes the "blue dolphin" name. Immature males lack the hump, but have longer dorsal and anal fins than the females of equivalent size.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Though large and territorial this species is quite mild and will get along well with its own kind and other easy going cichlids. Do not mix with aggressive tankmates as it is easily bullied. A maternal mouthbrooder this species is relatively easily bred. Wild fish inhabit sandy areas close to rocky formations, and so a mix of digging space and hiding places would be appreciated.
