Ictalurus furcatus (Blue Catfish)
A huge, predatory catfish widely farmed for human consumption and occasionally offered for trade. Essentially blue-grey in colour, darker above, fading to off-white below.
The blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus and the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus are very similar and easily confused. The two species can be most readily distinguished by the shape of the anal fin: on the Ictalurus furcatus this fin has a straight edge, whereas on Ictalurus punctatus it is curved.
In common with all Ictaluridae, the dorsal and pectoral fins are equipped with venomous spines.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Not really viable for the home aquarium, though hardy enough and regularly maintained at public aquaria. Tankmates need to be at least as large as the catfish. Obviously needs an aquarium with a lot of space, but also prefers strong water current as well. Breeding impossible under aquarium conditions, though widely done on fish farms.
