A large, pale to silvery grey pimelodid catfish conforming to the shovelnose catfish type, but with an exceptionally large snout and very deeply forked caudal fin.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A challenging species. Naturally inhabits rivers with appreciable water current and needs relatively cool, extremely clean water to do well. It has very long whiskers and will not feel settled its whiskers are constantly touching the glass walls of the aquarium. Despite its relatively small size by the standards of shovelnose catfish, this species really does need to be kept in a very large aquarium, ideally 750 litres or more. Does not get on with its own kind, and is best kept either alone or with robust midwater fish that will not compete for space at the bottom of the tank, for example large South American cichlids or large cyprinids such as tinfoil barbs. Because the species is skittish it should not be kept with nippy or aggressive tankmates. Feeds on wet-frozen and live foods including earthworms, tilapia fillet and chunky seafood. Will take catfish pellets once settled.
