Aulonocara kandeensis (Blue Orchid Aulonocara)
Closely related to Aulonocara maylandi, males of this species are blue-black with and silvery or electric blue band running from the mouth up the head and along the back. Unlike most other species in the genus, the females have egg spots on the anal fin, but they otherwise conform to the type, being rather smaller than the males, drab, and with vertical dark bars on the flanks.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A fairly tolerant community species, like many other members of this genus it is a colourful addition to the Lake Malawi aquarium. It is somewhat delicate though, and very sensitive to poor water quality and improper water chemistry. A maternal mouthbrooder, this species can be bred in the same way as other haplochromine cichlids.
