Anostomus anostomus(Striped Headstander)
A very impressive looking fish characterised by their behaviour of sometimes swimming with their head down.
These fish have a yellow, torpedo-shaped body with three dark stripes which run along the length of the body. The dorsal and tail fins have bright red markings.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Single specimens usually become good residents in community tanks with sturdy but peaceful tankmates, such as plecs, large barbs, and cichlids. When kept in small groups, these fish invariably become territorial and aggressive and will chase one another constantly, but if kept in large groups (seven or more specimens) territoriality is diminished and they become much more sociable.
These fish are omnivores, but are less dependant on algae than some other headstanders. Nonetheless, it is wise to offer them a mixed diet of flake foods, bloodworms, Daphnia, green algae, and small catfish pellets. If kept with dedicated algae eaters (such as plecs or flying foxes) be sure and offer vegetarian flake foods as an alternative. May eat soft-leaved plants, so plant with sturdy or fast-growing species such as Amazon swords, Java ferns, etc.
There are no reports of these fish having been bred in aquarium conditions.
|Water Parameters||Prefers slightly acid and soft water, but should adapt to most conditions.|
Useful sources of information:
For a well illustrated and detailed reference guide on this and many other fish, consider the Baensch Aquarium Atlases. Volume 1 contains all the common species, and later volumes cover more unusual species. You can buy these books here.
