Aphyocharax rathbuni(Rathbun's Bloodfin)
A hardy, easy-going fish that is adaptable and does well in community tanks with other peaceful species. Similar to the bloodfish, Aphyocharax paraguayensis, but with the black and white markings on the dorsal and anal fins.
Does well in moderately hard, slightly alkaline water, but for breeding purposes needs to be kept in soft, acid water.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful schooling fish that should only be kept with other small, quiet species. Pencilfish, hatchetfish, and Corydoras catfish would all make ideal companions.
Can be bred, though not considered to be easy. These fish need to be conditioned carefully with good live foods and maintained in soft, acid water. Eggs are scattered among plants (Java moss is ideal). The eggs are small and prone to fungus. The fry hatch after a couple of days and then use up their egg sac; only when this has been consumed will they eat small live foods such as infusorians and tiny crustaceans (e.g., newly hatched brine shrimp).
