![]() |
A slender tetra with a prominent black patch at the base of the tail. This patch is edged with white above and below. The fins are otherwise colourless. The two sexes are very similar, but they can be distinguished by the shape of the swim bladder. The males have a pointed swim bladder, while that of the females is rounded. Females also tend to be more robust, as is typical with tetras.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful, schooling fish that prefers midwater levels of the aquarium. It is a shy species that will only do well in a tank with plenty of cover (e.g., live or plastic plants) and peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament.
This fish breeds in a similar way to other small tetras. Soft, acid water is essential. Eggs are scattered on the bottom of the tank and are prone to bacterial and fungal decay. After a few days the fry are free swimming and will accept small live foods such as brine shrimp nauplii.
