Tetragonopterus argenteus (Silver Tetra)
A large, silver tetra that can be easily mistaken for a small silver dollar or even a piranha. Charcateristic features are black band running though the eye and a matching black spot on the base of the tail. The pelvic fins are red, and the edge of the anal fin may also have a reddish tinge.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Generally easy to look after and a good community fish, but perfectly capable of eating small species such as livebearer fry. Does not nip fins or molest plants.
Breeds readily in captivity. The eggs are scattered on the substrate (Java moss is ideal). The eggs hatch after about a day, and the fry become free swimming soon afterwards and will accept finely ground flake and Liquifry.
|Distribution||Brazil, Peru, Venezuela|
|Water Parameters||Soft, acid water preferred, but tolerates harder water well|
