L001 (Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus, Gold Spot Plec, L022)
An attractive species with a brownish body covered in small off-white or yellowy spots. As with most plecs, this species is often sold as an algae eater, but in addition it appreciates catfish pellets, algae wafers, bloodworms, small pieces of prawn, and slices of fruits and vegetables. Frozen peas, spinach, courgette, and blanched lettuce are especially appreciated.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Territorial, nocturnal scavenger. Aggressive towards its own species so only one to a tank. Relatively mild towards other plecs, and tends to be picked on by more aggressive plecs such as Hypostomus and Pterygoblichythys. Best kept as the only plec in the tank, or else with smaller, less aggressive species such as Ancistrus spp. An excellent community fish, this species mixes well with tetras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, etc.
This species is commercially farmed, but breeding in the home aquarium is not possible. Spawning takes place in deep tunnels in the mud.
