L021 and L023 are identical species collected from different places. Nor normally sold as an L-number catfish but merely as the "common plec" it is this species that is currently sold under that name rather than species such as Hypostomus plecostomus that were more common in the past.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A territorial but otherwise harmless catfish frequently kept in community tanks. This is an astonishingly adaptable species and can be kept even in hard, alkaline water such as that in African Lake cichlid aquaria, though soft to neutral, not too hard water is preferred. It will eat practically anything including algae, vegetables, catfish pellets, bloodworms, small pieces of fish, and chunks of prawn. Some bogwood should be provided as a source of dietary fibre. Doesn't eat plants but can damage them, especially when large, either by scraping them while foraging for algae or simply by uprooting them. Appreciates hiding places and lots of swimming space. Although sold as a small fish, this species grows rapidly, and needs a fairly large aquarium to do well.

Family Group: L Numbers
Distribution Brazil, Rio Araguaia
Temperature 24-28C
Size 30-45 cm
Water Parameters Adaptable, but avoid extremes
Water PH 6.5-7.5
