L083 (Sailfin Pleco)

A popular and hardy catfish that works well in any community tank. It can be very aggressive towards other plecs, but its robust character makes it suitable for use with territorial fishes of other types such as loaches and cichlids. Basically brick red in colour with a giraffe-like pattern of dark brown patches. The sail-like fin is very distinctive. Known by a variety of names, including "gibby", L-numbers L083, L165, and L196, and the sailfin plec, on account of its huge dorsal fin.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Generally peaceful but territorial towards its own kind and other plecs. Mixes very well with quiet cichlids and midwater fish such as barbs and characins. Messy, but otherwise robust and easy to care for provided it is given space and adequate filtration. Eats most foods, including algae, but also vegetables, catfish pellets, and small pieces of prawn and mussel.
