Panaque L204 (Flash Plec, Clown Plec, Panaqolus L204)
A medium-sized loricariid catfish that shares the standard Panaque feature of large, spoon-like teeth used for shredding plant material, particularly wood. Juveniles are brightly coloured with chocolate brown and yellow bands, but these fade somewhat as the fish mature.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Panaque require a diet based mostly on plant foods of various types: soft vegetables, algae wafers and especially bogwood. Unlike other grazing catfish, Panaque are able to digest wood, and according to some experts when provided with too much protein and too little wood fibre they become sickly. Meaty foods such as bloodworms and standard catfish pellets can be used, but only sparingly. Eats some green algae, but not a particularly effective "algae eater".
Under aquarium conditions these catfish generally prove to be hardy and easy to care for, but newly imported specimens can be delicate.
Has been bred in home aquaria. Males guard the eggs inside a suitable cave. Essentially similar to breeding Ancistrus spp., though females may need more careful conditioning prior to spawning.
