Males are robust, hump-backed fish with vivid colours: steel blue around the back half of the body and orange-yellow on the caudal peduncle. Females are rather drab in comparison.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
An aggressive, boisterous fish best kept in a single species aquarium or with other robust livebearers. Considered to be a fin-nipper, so do not keep with slow-moving fish or species with long fins (such as fancy guppies). Breeding is unproblematic, as these fish are generally quite productive, producing broods of a few dozen fry every couple of months. The fry are easily reared on algae, liquid fry food, and small live foods.
