Pristolepis fasciata (Malayan Leaffish, Catopra)

Body is deep and robust, rather cichlid-like in shape. Colouration varies from green to yellow; juveniles especially show up to a dozen vertical bands on the flanks. Fins green, except the pectoral fins, which are yellow. An understated but attractive fish.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Omnivores; wild fish eat insects, small fish, fruits, algae, and aquatic plants. In the aquarium they show a particular fondness for robust live foods such as earthworms, but frozen foods of all types are taken.

Quarrelsome among their own kind, but tolerant of large, peaceful tankmates such as plecs and tinfoil barbs.

Has not been spawned in home aquaria, but known to be a nest-builder, the male digging a pit and then guarding the eggs until they hatch.
