Salarias fluviatilis (Freshwater Blenny)

Medium-sized, very active, goby-like fish, the males being further marked by a distinctive crest on its head.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Needs cool (maximum temperature 20 C), well oxygenated water. Good filtration and a strong water current essential. The freshwater blenny cannot be adapted to brackish water and needs neutral, moderately hard water to do well.

A substrate of sand and water-worn pebbles will reproduce their natural environment most closely, but the aquarist should also ensure that the fishes have caves or burrows as well. Choose tankmates with care, partly to ensure that water quality is maintained, but also because these blennies are shy and easily bullied. White cloud mountain minnows would be ideal dither fish, and will encourage the blennies to swim in the open.

Family Group: Miscellaneous
Distribution Southern Europe and North Africa
Temperature 15 - 20 C
Size 15 cm
Water Parameters Hard, alkaline water essential
Water PH 7.5
