A relatively elongate rainbowfish distinguished by five thin, horizontal bands along the flanks. The uppermost two are black and run from just behind the eye to the base of the tail. The third band is red and is along the midline of the fish. The remaining two bands are black and start about halfway along the body and finish close to the base of the second anal fin. The unpaired fins are edged with orange and black.

Males are more brightly coloured than the females, but lack the deep bodied profile generally typical of rainbowfish.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Rainbowfish invariably make good companions for similar size, non-aggressive tankmates. They are hardy and long-lived, and tend to do well in hard, alkaline water making them a good choice for fishkeepers without access to the soft water preferred by barbs and tetras.

Breeding rainbowfish is generally not difficult. Eggs are scattered over open, sandy substrates and take about a week to hatch. Conditioning the parents on a good diet of live and frozen foods is important. The fry, once free swimming, will take small pond foods and brine shrimp nauplii.
