Rasbora trilineata (Scissortailed Rasbora)
A very popular fish which is peaceful and makes an excellent addition to a community tank. They can get quite large so this must be borne in mind when buying a group of these fish. They are almost transparent with a thin black line which runs from the gills to the base of the tail. The upper half of the body has a yellow/green colouration. The reason for the name of Scissortail is that as the fish swims the tail opens and closes and because of the markings on the tail fins this does appear as almost a scissor action.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Sexing these fish is quite difficult and the only real distinguishing feature is that at maturity the females are longer than the males and are also deeper bodied. They can be quite difficult to breed. The tank should be relatively long and the water should be soft and slightly acidic. Provide plenty of plants and also a dark substrate. Place a pair in the breeding tank late in the day and they should spawn early the next morning. The eggs will be scattered in plants and as soon as spawning has taken place remove the adults. The eggs should hatch within 24 hours and the fry should be free swimming by the fourth day when they can be fed on appropriate fry foods such as infusoria.
