Apistogramma bitaeniata (Two Striped Dwarf Cichlid)

A fairly enlongate species with a bold horizontal band running from the eye to the base of tail. Colouration is variable, with blue, yellow, and red markings being found on different individuals. A distinctive feature is the roughly circular thickening of the longitudinal band about midway along the flanks.

Males and females are similar, but the male is bigger, has forked rather than rounded tail, is more brightly coloured, and has extended fin rays in the dorsal.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A generally peaceful cichlid, but can be territorial towards members of their own species especially when spawning. A polygamous species, this fish is best kept as one male to 2-3 females. Under such circumstances, use a fairly large tank and allow each fish a cave or lair of its own.
