Greenish-silver fish noted for the thick black bar behind the head. There is also a small dark spot on the top part of the base of the tail. The fins are marked with blue and red. Differences between the sexes are not reliable.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A moderately aggressive, territorial medium sized species suitable for inclusion in community tanks only with other robust species such as large barbs and catfish. Predatory, so do not mix with small fish. Food is captured in midwater rather than from the substrate, so choose robust live foods such as river shrimp and brine shrimp or use floating pellets and flake.
This species is somewhat delicate in captivity and needs warm, clean water to do well. Breeding is not frequent in aquaria though they are prolific animals that can lay up to a thousand eggs. Both parents guard the eggs and fry. The fry are large and once free swimming are easy to rear on brine shrimp nauplii.
