A big shark-minnow similar to other Labeo species in shape but notable for the coppery spots on the scales along the flanks. These are largest and most prominent immediately behind the head and above the paired fins, and become smaller and fainter towards the tail. Body colour is dark grey.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A large, partially herbivorous fish suitable for big community systems alongside other fish of equivalent size. Quarrelsome with its own kind (and other shark-minnows) under aquarium conditions, but ignores dissimilar species (catfish, cichlids, etc.).
Essentially easy to care for except with regard to its large size. Only suitable for the largest aquaria, even though it is unlikely to reach its maximum size in captivity. Filtration must be robust, and plenty of water movement is required because this species naturally inhabits large rivers rather than still waters.
Omnivorous; eats algae, soft plants, small invertebrates and prepared foods such as algae pellets and catfish pellets.
